Amy Heckerling’s sharp and witty teen comedy is loosely based on Jane Austen’s classic novel Emma, transplanted to 1990s Beverly Hills. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is beautiful, wealthy, and completely on top of the truly important things in life: the right boys, the right clothes, and the right look. From her position as the most popular girl at school, at least within the right clique, she can manipulate just about everyone around her. Cher has a talent for taking friends and teachers in hand when they are in need of a little change and, just like that, helping them toward a more successful life.

“Many funny female roles exist on the borderline between foolish and brilliant, as seen for example in Clueless. The ‘dumb woman’ has rightly been highlighted as an expression of misogyny, but she also becomes a way of exposing the foolishness of her society. Because who really gets the last laugh?” This question was posed by the writers Emma Holten and Signe Amtoft when they introduced Clueless at the Cinemateket in 2023.
